A PLANTAGENET Shire councillor is circulating a petition to see if resolution can be reached on Mount Barker’s contentious free overnight RV and caravan stop.
Cr Sue Etherington said she had put the petition out to gauge local public opinion on the free RV site, coverage of which last week drew 68 comments and more than 5000 clicks on voiceofthesouth.com.au.
“I’ve circulated the petition to let other councillors know that there are a lot of people in town against the free RV stop,” Cr Etherington said.
“I believe the current location is problematic.
“Also, there are a number of hygiene issues to do with the current site that have been brought to my attention that I am confident the Council will address.”
The petition, addressed to Shire President Chris Pavlovich, asks the Shire to “discontinue the practice of allowing free camping for self-contained RVs at the car park, west of the Town Hall and, in fact, anywhere within the town boundary”.
“A large percentage of the RVs are not self-contained, resulting in health and safety issues, with the need to be continually policed and rubbish collected,” the petition expands.
Cr Etherington said about 400 people had signed the petition so far.
