Owner absent as house burns

By Anthony Probert

A HOUSE on Mount Shadforth Road in Denmark was destroyed by fire on Sunday night.

Fire ripped through this cottage on Mt Shadforth Road on Sunday night.

Fire and Emergency Services Albany district officer Rob Lake said it took more than 40 career and volunteer firefighters one and a half hours to bring the flames under control. He said a call was made to the Denmark Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service at 8.50pm. The first crew arrived to find flames engulfing the house and breaching the roof.

The owners, who were absent at the time, were located by police in Albany and escorted back to Denmark. “They were very upset and very distraught,” Mr Lake said. Damage has been estimated at more than $300,000. Some minor damage was also done to an outbuilding on an adjoining property. Mr Lake said the cause of the fire was being investigated but was not considered suspicious.

The owners’ cat, which had gone missing during the fire, had been found alive and well, he said.

Fire crews put out a small flare-up of burning books inside the house on Monday morning.
