College chess clubbers head for national finals

PRIMARY school students from Years 4, 5 and 6 at Mount Barker Community college are headed for Melbourne in December, for the national chess titles.

The club reached the WA State finals in 2018.

That inspired them to aim higher, so this year, with the help of a keen parent group, the club won third place in the recent State finals, qualifying them for a spot at the nationals.

“We are all very proud of their achievement,” he said.

“Reaching the nationals is a huge effort, and I believe they have a great opportunity do very well.”

Ten youngsters form the competing club, with each bringing their own skills to the board.

The college is fundraising to cover the costs of the trip, and can be contacted on 9851 3400.
